MICHELIN: a human adventure

Brothers Édouard and André Michelin made a key contribution to revolutionising modern transport by inventing the removable tire. The Michelin brothers were pioneers in many fields. For instance, they were the first to make a car run on tyres and they also invented a modern road-signage system. They also made a name for themselves in advertising by bringing a stack of tires to life in the form of the Michelin Man in 1898.

The history of Michelin, which is one of the world’s leading tire makers today and has been a flagship of French industry for 130 years, is therefore closely linked to that of French society and the global events that marked the 20th century.

This book presents over 600 documents, most of them never previously published. It has set out to be the go-to reference book on the group’s history, from its beginning with the Barbier et Daubrée company through to the latest innovations, and a testimony to the singularity and identity of a deeply engaging company.
