Michelin in Clermont-Ferrand, a factory in the city – Inventory
22,00€
In Clermont-Ferrand, the city where the history of the Manufacture began, Michelin’s “lands” are in a state of perpetual transformation, and for several years now have been undergoing rapid modernization. These production, research and freight sites, which have formed a large part of Clermont-Ferrand’s urban fabric since the end of the 19th century, still represent significant areas of the city and are now an integral part of it. The Carmes, Cataroux, Combaude, Ladoux, Chantemerle and Gravanches sites still have a strong influence on industrial activity, not only in Clermont-Ferrand, but also nationally and internationally. Only the Estaing site, one of the oldest, was dismantled in the early 2000s.
Another aspect of the Tire Factory’s activities was its social work, which left a significant mark on the landscape of Clermont-Ferrand and the surrounding area, with the creation of some forty workers’ housing estates, very diverse despite their apparent uniformity.
These sites are part of the collective memory of the people of Clermont-Ferrand and of all the company’s “Bibs” around the world.
This book, the fruit of a study carried out by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region’s Inventory of Cultural Heritage, offers a historical overview of this nearly 150-year-old heritage, as well as a snapshot of the current situation.
